The Gurdwara’s full name is Gurdwara Janam Asthan Nankana Sahib. It is often referred to simply as Nankana Sahib, which is both the name of the Gurdwara and the city where it is located. The term “Janam Asthan” means "birthplace," directly referencing the sacred site where Guru Nanak was born.
History
Gurdwara Janam Asthan marks the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, born in 1469. The Gurdwara was established on this sacred site in the late 16th century and has since undergone significant renovations, particularly during the early 20th century, under Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. The site has been a major center of pilgrimage for Sikhs since its establishment, and it continues to play a central role in Sikh religious life.
About
Gurdwara Nankana Sahib is one of the holiest places in Sikhism. It not only commemorates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji but also serves as a symbol of Sikh heritage and spirituality. The Gurdwara complex is expansive, with a large dome, a langar hall (community kitchen), and residential facilities for pilgrims. It attracts thousands of devotees annually, especially during the Gurpurab (birth anniversary of Guru Nanak), a festival that sees an influx of pilgrims from all over the world.
Role of PSGPC
The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (PSGPC) has been actively involved in the maintenance, renovation, and management of Gurdwara Janam Asthan. PSGPC plays a vital role in organizing the annual Gurpurab celebrations and coordinating with the Pakistani government to ensure the smooth facilitation of Sikh pilgrims.
Location
Gurdwara Janam Asthan is located in Nankana Sahib, Punjab, Pakistan, about 75 kilometers west of Lahore. Pilgrims can reach the Gurdwara by road from Lahore via a well-connected network of highways. During peak pilgrimage periods, such as Guru Nanak’s Gurpurab in November, the Gurdwara sees thousands of yatrees from across the world. Special accommodations and travel arrangements, including the Kartarpur Corridor, have made it easier for Indian Sikhs to visit the shrine.
